IMAX Enhanced: the technology powering 4K TVs, speakers, and soundbars.

We examine IMAX Enhanced, the best way to enjoy IMAX movies at home.

IMAX Enhanced is a certification and licensing program launched by IMAX in collaboration with DTS, aiming to deliver the iconic cinematic experience of IMAX theaters in the comfort of home. This system is designed to enhance both audio and video quality, providing users with an immersive visual experience characterized by clarity, deep contrast, and powerful sound.

According to Vikram Arumilli, Senior Vice President and General Manager of IMAX, the initiative was born with the intention of bringing the IMAX Experience to audiences beyond the cinema. To achieve this, IMAX collaborates with leading studios and filmmakers worldwide to adapt their content specifically for the IMAX Enhanced format. Additionally, it works with top-tier device manufacturers to ensure that their TVs, audio players, and other devices meet the stringent quality standards of the program.

An initial example of this initiative was Disney, which released some of its MCU movie titles in this streaming format in 2021. The selection of both titles and devices for certification is rigorous; priority is given to those that have been shown in IMAX theaters and make the most of the format.

Regarding technical specifications, devices seeking IMAX Enhanced certification must meet certain standards. For instance, TVs require support for 4K playback and an IMAX Enhanced mode that optimizes color performance, contrast, brightness, and shadow detail. It is also essential that they support DTS:X playback to replicate the immersive sound experience characteristic of IMAX theaters.

The list of IMAX-certified products can be found on their website, which includes TVs, projectors, speakers, and soundbars. Some of the top-rated TV models, such as the Sony Bravia 9 and 8 OLED, are part of this list, along with others that, while not mentioned, are also certified.

The availability of IMAX Enhanced content is quite extensive, with a significant selection of Marvel titles on Disney+, as well as others available on the Sony Pictures Core service on Sony TVs. IMAX is also partnering with platforms such as Rakuten TV and several major streaming services in China, including iQIYI, Tencent Video, and Youku.

Arumilli emphasizes that they are constantly seeking to expand their library and that 2025 will bring a series of new titles specifically filmed for IMAX to theaters, which could positively impact the availability of IMAX Enhanced content. Additionally, they are exploring new categories of devices and applications, such as their recent collaboration with Apple for the launch of an IMAX app for the Vision Pro VR headset, as well as optimizing entertainment experiences in cars and flights.
