I tried the new JBL AV receivers compatible with Dolby Atmos and Xbox, along with the Stage 2 speakers, and they deliver high-quality sound at an affordable price.
Elements for the era of modern audio.
On October 16, 2024, at a presentation event for JBL's Modern Audio AV receivers and Stage 2 speakers, the usual discretion was observed at the entrances of recording studios in New York. The only visible brand signal was a large "JBL" sign in its signature burnt orange color. These new products are not aimed at high-end audiophiles but rather at the new generation of music and movie lovers, many of whom have not updated their sound systems due to the cost and complexity of doing so.
The suggested retail price for the Modern Audio AV receivers ranges from $399 to $1,599, while the Stage 2 speakers are priced between $299 and $1,195 per pair. This allows for a complete 5.1 audio system to be acquired for around $1,700. Both products are available in two finishes: Espresso (black) and Latte (white).
Upon entering the venue, a spacious reception area was observed, equipped with lounge areas and a bar, where live music events and creative meetings take place. Attendees were then taken to a theater where the new products were presented with participation from representatives of JBL, Dolby Laboratories, and Republic Studios.
The Modern Audio AV receivers are JBL's first in the brand's lineup, featuring a minimalist industrial design that presents a simple interface, focused on volume control and surround sound modes. Although they are not designed to connect to conventional audio components, they can easily be connected to televisions or gaming consoles via HDMI. They include sound calibration using the "EZ-Set EQ" app and are compatible with smart home products. The remote controls are straightforward, and their LED lighting functions, similar to gaming devices, add a modern touch.
As for the Stage 2 speakers, the line includes floor-standing speakers, bookshelf speakers, and subwoofers, as well as a center channel and an overhead module compatible with Atmos. They are designed to deliver rich, efficient sound, employing anodized aluminum tweeters in a new waveguide design. Each model promises deep and precise bass, and the higher-end models allow for improved performance in low frequencies.
During the demonstrations in the theater, different configurations of the products were used, showcasing their sound quality with tracks from well-known artists. The separation of instruments was clear, the dynamic range was well achieved, and the bass response was satisfying.
Later, multichannel Atmos demonstrations were conducted in the studio’s artist lounge, where immersive sound effects were experienced with scenes from well-known movies. The sounds were detailed and impactful, providing an enveloping auditory experience.
With the Modern Audio receivers and speakers, JBL aims to offer an accessible solution for those looking to enhance their sound quality without complications. These single-brand products are designed to work together, making the upgrade of a home audio system simple and appealing for movie and gaming enthusiasts.
