I have left X for Bluesky.
Tired of Musk's take on Twitter? Try Bluesky.
Bluesky, the social platform that originated as a parallel project of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, has become an attractive option for those seeking alternatives to Twitter/X since Elon Musk's acquisition in October 2022. Since its debut in 2019 as an experiment, Bluesky has rapidly grown, surpassing 31.3 million users by February 2025.
Launched to the public on February 6, 2024, Bluesky was initially conceived as research into the decentralization of Twitter. With a team of about 50 people and $13 million in funding, the platform began attracting users looking for a more controlled experience compared to the direction Twitter was taking. During its early launch phases, Bluesky reported between one and ten million daily active users, and its popularity saw a notable increase toward the end of 2024, exceeding 20 million users.
Bluesky positions itself as an "open" social network that offers an easy-to-use flow, allowing users greater control over their feeds and preferences. Users can follow profiles, send direct messages, and post up to 300 words in a single post, as well as share images and videos. Unlike Twitter, where content from unfollowed accounts often appears, Bluesky allows users to create "Starter Packs" and custom lists, influencing their main feed and the content displayed to them.
A distinctive aspect of Bluesky is its approach to account verification. Unlike the checkmark verification used by others, in Bluesky, users can self-verify their accounts using an established domain, simplifying the process. However, despite its rapid growth, Bluesky faces the disadvantage of having a considerably smaller user base compared to platforms like Threads, which has around 300 million monthly users.
Moderation in Bluesky follows a "stackable" approach, where moderators collaborate through an open-source tool, Ozone, to review and tag content according to community guidelines. Although this system has its advantages, there can be risks of misinformation, given users' responsibility in moderating content.
As Bluesky evolves, users must be cautious about what they post and vigilant in reporting inappropriate content, as it remains a platform still in development.
