How to Identify if an AirTag is Tracking You
It only takes a few simple steps.
Since their launch in 2021, Apple’s AirTags have proven to be extremely useful tools for many people, allowing for the easy localization of objects like keys, luggage, or pet collars. However, they have also raised privacy concerns and the possibility of being used for unwanted tracking, a matter that has prompted Apple to develop additional security measures.
The company has acknowledged that AirTags can be placed without consent in bags, vehicles, or belongings of others, which poses harassment risks. To counter this, Apple implemented a detection system that was initially available only to iPhone users. During Google I/O 2023, it was announced that Apple is collaborating with Google to extend the detection capability of AirTags and other tracking devices, such as Tile and Chipolo, to any device, whether Android or Apple.
For iPhone users, activating alerts for unknown AirTags is straightforward. They will receive a notification stating "AirTag found that is moving with you" if an unrecognized AirTag is nearby. To receive these alerts, it is necessary to ensure that the device is updated to at least iOS 14.5 and that location services are enabled. Additionally, users must enable notifications in the "Me" tab of the "Find My" app.
As for Android users, the procedure is somewhat different. They need to go into device settings, access "Safety & emergency," and then select "Unknown tracker alerts." If this option is enabled, they will receive a notification if an unknown tracker is nearby.
It is relatively simple to identify if an AirTag is tracking someone, provided that the corresponding notifications are enabled, which involves a few setup steps. When a tracker is detected, the "Find My" feature allows users to make the AirTag emit a sound to facilitate its location, and if it needs to be deactivated, the battery cover can simply be removed.
