How to Disconnect from Elon Musk's Twitter/X.
You can leave X in search of better social opportunities.
The platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has seen a significant change in its dynamics and popularity. Historically, this space was used to share memes, world news, and pop culture. However, its nature also required users to navigate through a large number of toxic characters, bots, and deepfakes. With Elon Musk taking charge, modifications have been implemented that have discouraged many users, who have begun to migrate to other emerging social networks like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon.
Now, following the conclusion of the 2024 presidential elections in the United States, Musk remains an influential figure within X. Additionally, the recent changes have made the experience of using the platform less secure. As a result, a new wave of users is looking to abandon X.
If you are one of those users considering leaving the platform, there are some steps to follow to deactivate your account.
The first step is to change your account to a private profile. This will allow you to communicate to your current followers that you are leaving and why. You can set this up from the side menu in your browser or by tapping your profile icon in the mobile app. Once you make this change, only your current followers will be able to see your posts and other information.
The second step is to download your previous data. If you have an extensive history on the network, you may want to keep certain tweets. Again, you can do this from the settings menu, where you can request a file with your information, which will arrive in your email within up to 24 hours.
Finally, the third step is to proceed with deactivating your account. This process is also initiated from the settings menu, and you will need to read certain information regarding the retention of your data for 30 days before it is permanently deleted. If you change your mind within that period, you can reactivate your account simply by logging in.
In short, if you are considering a new direction in social media, there are multiple options available outside of X.
