How to Disable Meta's Artificial Intelligence
The maximum possible, at least.
Meta has integrated its artificial intelligence assistant, known as Meta AI, across all its platforms. However, its presence can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, as the chatbot attempts to initiate conversations and often fills the screen with automatic summaries of posts and suggested questions. Because of this, Meta has decided that it is not possible to completely remove the AI assistant from its applications.
Despite this limitation, there are options to reduce the visibility of Meta AI. This article provides instructions on how to lessen its presence on Facebook and Instagram, as well as how to disable the automated summaries generated by Meta AI.
To mute Meta AI on Facebook and Instagram, follow these steps:
- Open the Facebook app and log into your account.
- Tap the “search” button, which may open Meta AI.
- A prompt will appear saying “Ask Meta AI anything.” Tap the blue navigation triangle in the top right corner to open the chatbot.
- Select the "i" inside a blue circle at the top of the screen.
- Press the mute button located next to the "share" and "profile" buttons.
- You will then be able to choose how long you want to mute Meta AI, from 15 minutes to "until I change it."
The same procedure applies to Instagram. While you will still see the Meta AI label in the search bar and can access it if you choose, it won’t be as intrusive.
Meta AI's comment summaries can be useful for summarizing long or complex posts, as a complement to the user experience. However, they can sometimes take up too much screen space. If you find these summaries unhelpful, you can disable them by following these steps:
- Open Facebook in a web browser or the mobile app and go to the settings menu.
- Click or tap "Settings" within the “Settings & Privacy” menu.
- Go to the "Posts" submenu.
- Slide the option “Allow comment summaries on your posts” to the left to turn it off.
Once you disable this option, you should no longer see the AI-generated summaries after refreshing the website or app.
