Henry Cavill is set to star in a live-action adaptation of Voltron, according to recent reports. The film will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for his work on projects with Dwayne Johnson, for Amazon MGM Studios. This news comes shortly after Daniel Quinn-Toye, the understudy for Tom Holland in the production of Romeo and Juliet in the West End, joined the cast.
Voltron, which has its roots in an animated series from the 1980s produced by Toei Animation and World Events Productions, follows the story of five young pilots who control robotic lions that combine to form the powerful entity known as Voltron. The animated series was inspired by two acclaimed Japanese mecha animes: Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. Its popularity has led to multiple spin-offs, comics, video games, and a toy line.
The screenplay for this new film was crafted by Thurber alongside Ellen Shanman, although details about the plot have yet to be revealed. The production features Thurber and his team from Hidden Picture, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman.
Since his departure from the DC universe, Cavill has been busy with several film projects for 2024, including Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. He also had a notable appearance as Wolverine, nicknamed "Cavallrine," in Deadpool & Wolverine. Additionally, the actor wrapped up his final season in The Witcher before handing the role over to Liam Hemsworth. Cavill will be part of In the Grey by Guy Ritchie, which premieres on January 17, 2025, and he will also star in and produce live-action adaptations of the Warhammer 40,000 video game franchise.
