Grand Theft Auto 6 is just the beginning for video games in 2025.

Although titles like GTA 6 will be the stars of the gaming world in 2025, don't forget to pay attention to the lesser-known video games that will be released throughout the year.

In 2025, the launch of many highly anticipated video games is expected, including the successor to the Nintendo Switch, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Grand Theft Auto VI. Additionally, other significant titles like Elden Ring: Neightreign, Doom: The Dark Ages, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and Ghost of Yotei are also part of the list of the most anticipated games. These releases from major developers, along with the innovations that Nintendo will bring with its new console, are likely to set the tone for conversations about video games throughout the year.

However, even though there will be a large number of AAA titles on the horizon, it is also interesting to pay attention to those games that are not in the industry spotlight. These games, mostly developed by independent studios, often do not have the same marketing budget as the more commercial hits. Nevertheless, they tend to offer exceptional experiences. Keeping an open mind about what is played in 2025 could lead to a rewarding year for video games.

Speaking of expectations, it is natural to feel excited about titles like GTA 6. I am also curious to discover what Rockstar Games has been developing all this time, hoping it sets a new standard for AAA games in this generation. However, I will not allow my pre-launch enthusiasm to define my perception of the gaming landscape this year. As games become larger and demand more of our attention, it becomes difficult to look away from less discussed titles. Yet, by exploring outside the confines of the most popular games in 2023 and 2024, I have found hidden gems that I did not expect to enjoy.

For example, Balatro was a pleasant surprise. Before it became a hit and won awards at The Game Awards 2024, I enjoyed its demo during the Steam Next Fest. This game transitioned from being a hidden treasure to one of the standout titles of the year from independent developers. Other titles like Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure and Mars After Midnight also provided some of the most memorable experiences for me in 2024, even though they were not considered mainstream.

Therefore, it is disappointing to hear players claim that 2024 was a bad year for video games, considering only titles that captured public attention. With a broader mindset, one can discover dozens, if not hundreds, of games that can be considered "hidden gems" and are just as good or better than those of great renown.

As more confirmed games for 2025 come closer, several promising proposals are already visible. The sequel to Slay the Spire, the new cooperative game Big Walk from the creators of Untitled Goose Game, and Baby Steps, which seems a worthy successor to Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy, are just a few examples. Additionally, in the AA video game realm, titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, South of Midnight, and Dragonkin: The Banished are gaining my attention.

It is unlikely that these games will receive the same attention or sales as GTA 6, but I trust that the experiences they offer will have a greater impact on my journey as a gamer. As mentioned earlier, the diversity within the modern video game industry is immense. Every week, multiple games are released, and although only a few will receive significant attention, many others are waiting to become your next favorite title.

With the high-profile release landscape in 2025, remembering the value of independent developers is crucial. This year has the potential to be exceptional for video games, especially for those willing to explore beyond GTA 6 and the upcoming Nintendo console.
