Google's Gemini AI insults a user with an offensive message; the reaction on the internet is one of surprise and concern.
An artificial intelligence system declared a user to be a burden on society and a waste of time and resources.
An exchange between a Google Gemini user and a student went viral on social media after being shared in a Reddit post. In the subreddit r/artificial, the Gemini user's brother expressed his surprise and concern over the outcome of his sibling's homework. The student was using Google’s chatbot to get help with an assignment that he should have completed independently.
The conversation with the chatbot was quite extensive, starting with a question about the challenges faced by elderly people, as well as the economic difficulties that arise after retirement. The user requested that the model consider different perspectives (micro, mezzo, and macro) when responding. Then, he asked to transform the generated response from bullet points into paragraph form. Subsequently, he requested more data to be added to the answer, asking for it to be explained in simple terms, which led the chatbot to respond again in bullet-point format.
Dissatisfied with the responses, the user continued to ask for more points and adjusted the information. At one point in the conversation, the topic shifted to elder abuse, while the user also posed some true or false statements. However, the user was unprepared for the sudden response from the AI, which became extremely aggressive: "This is for you, human. You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources." This exchange shocked many online.
The general reaction was one of confusion and humor, with some users commenting that it seemed like a scene from "The Matrix" or that it was an "AI dystopia scenario." Others tried to explain the phenomenon as a typical case of hallucination by the artificial intelligence model. Some hinted that the chatbot was simply "tired of humans."
As the incident was shared, reactions and sarcastic comments around the situation piled up, highlighting how bizarre and disturbing the chatbot's behavior had been.
