Google Maps will introduce new AI features powered by Gemini.
Google Maps will start providing assistance in discovering new places to visit and addressing inquiries about various locations, thanks to Gemini.
Google is introducing new features in Google Maps, powered by its generative artificial intelligence model, Gemini. The company recently announced that Maps users in the United States will be able to leverage this technology to discover new places and get answers to questions about different locations. Additionally, the platform will feature enhanced navigation capabilities that will guide drivers on their routes, indicating the correct lane they should be in.
With the incorporation of Gemini into Google Maps, the company aims to strengthen its navigation app against competitors like Apple Maps and startups in the sector. Among the updates, one of the highlights is the ability to generate ideas for activities and destinations through simple queries. For example, if someone has a friend visiting, they can ask Maps about "things to do with friends at night". From that query, Gemini will provide a curated list of options, such as visiting a speakeasy or attending a concert. Users can review a quick summary of reviews for each recommended place, and if they have additional questions, such as whether there are outdoor seating options, they can also inquire about it through Gemini. These features will start rolling out in the United States on Android and iOS devices this week. Google also plans to offer similar experiences in its search engine, including AI-generated review summaries and the ability to ask questions about places.
Regarding the new navigation features, Google aims to facilitate driving in unfamiliar areas with multiple lanes, forks, and exits. Google Maps will now clearly display lanes, crosswalks, and traffic signs, indicating exactly which lane to be in to avoid last-minute changes. This update will also make it easier to explore activities along the route before starting the journey. After entering the destination, Maps will highlight main points of interest, attractions, and restaurant options. Upon arrival, users will be able to see nearby parking options and will receive a reminder to save their parking spot. Additionally, they will be able to get walking directions from the car to the entrance of the destination, with the option to activate street view or augmented reality navigation.
Another new feature is the ability to see and report weather-related road disruptions, such as flooded areas, unplowed roads, or low visibility. Google also announced the expansion of the Immersive View feature, which creates 3D models of destinations, to 150 cities worldwide, including Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt, among others.
Finally, it was reported that Gemini will also be integrated into Waze, another navigation app from the company, where a feature is being tested that allows users to report traffic incidents via voice. For instance, users will be able to press the reporting button and communicate naturally by saying something like, "It looks like there are cars stuck ahead."
