Google Docs will allow users to organize information in tabs.

A more efficient way to structure and explore extensive documents.

Google Docs has introduced a new tab feature that will facilitate the organization and access to information in lengthy documents. This development was announced in April and is now being gradually rolled out to all Google Workspace users and personal Google accounts, although availability may take a few weeks.

With the addition of tabs, it becomes possible to draft and structure content in a way that allows for quick information retrieval and maintains focus. According to Google, this update will enable readers to navigate through the document more easily and concentrate on the sections they find most relevant.

This new option provides the ability to jump to specific sections within longer documents, eliminating the need to create separate files. Tabs can be accessed in the Google Docs web editor by selecting the bullet symbol in the upper left corner of the document screen. This symbol, which previously displayed "show document outline," will now read "Show tabs and outlines," offering users the option to add and manage multiple tabs, including subtabs for creating customizable categories. For example, users are encouraged to create a "budget" tab that includes subtabs for specific expenses like food and travel.

The feature allows users to add up to three levels of subtabs, which can be created by selecting "Add subtab" from the tab options menu or dragging one tab onto another, automatically converting it into a subtab. Users can label each tab and subtab with a name and an emoji for quick identification. The tab navigation menu will open by default in documents that contain two or more tabs, and it will be possible to share links to specific tabs by clicking the three-dot menu next to each tab.

Tab editing capabilities, such as renaming, duplicating, or deleting tabs, are available only to users with editing access to the document. Other users can view and navigate through the tabs in suggestion mode but will not be able to make changes.
