Google Chrome on Android will receive a significant update for password managers that has been long awaited.

The automatic filling feature for third-party password managers will be enabled.

Google has decided to address a longstanding issue affecting the functionality of third-party password managers in the Android version of Chrome. In an update scheduled for next month, native autofill will be enabled for password manager apps such as Dashlane and 1Password within the Chrome app on Android devices. This information was shared by developer advocate Eiji Kitamura in a post on Google's Android Developers blog.

Among the problems that have arisen, Kitamura highlighted two: "duplicate suggestions from Google and a third party" and "unstable scrolling" when using these password managers. These issues occur because password managers must operate in a "compatibility mode" when interacting with Chrome, even if they are set as the system default in Android settings. As noted, these failures do not occur in Safari or even in Chrome for iOS.

With the new update, third-party password managers will be able to natively autofill not only passwords and passkeys but also other data, such as addresses and payment information.

For those who want to try this update before its official release, a beta version of Chrome 131 is available from the Google Play Store. To do so, several steps must be followed: first, go to the Settings app and select the Passwords, passkeys, and accounts tab, then click on the Change button below the selected service and choose a new third-party one.

Next, it is necessary to open the Chrome app and enter the following text in the URL bar: chrome://flags#enable-autofill-virtual-view-structure. Change the flag that appears to Enabled and restart Chrome. Finally, go to Chrome Settings, select Autofill services, choose Autofill with another service, and restart Chrome again.

The stable version of Chrome 131 will be available to all users on November 12.
