Ford faces a $165 million fine for slow action on a recall for rearview cameras.

The second highest penalty imposed by NHTSA in history.

Ford has reached an agreement to pay a fine that could amount to $165 million following the decision by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the company's delay in recalling vehicles with defective rearview cameras. Additionally, it was determined that the company did not provide recall information accurately and completely. This fine is the second highest in history, surpassed only by the $200 million imposed on Takata.

The recall, initially issued in 2020, affects over 600,000 vehicles manufactured since 2019, including models such as the Ford F-150, Mustang, Escape, Ranger, and Expedition, as well as the Lincoln Nautilus and Corsair. The involved vehicles have an issue with the rearview camera that sometimes displays a “blank or distorted image.” Ford, for its part, claims that no accidents or injuries have been reported due to this defect.

According to the agreement, Ford will pay $65 million immediately, followed by a deferred payment of $55 million and an additional investment of $45 million that will be allocated to the development of a safety data infrastructure and a testing laboratory for rearview camera components.

A Ford representative, Maria Buczkowski, stated in a release that they "value the opportunity to resolve this matter with the NHTSA and remain committed to continuous improvement in safety and compliance at Ford." She also indicated that significant improvements are already underway, including advancements in data analytics and the establishment of a new internal testing facility.

Furthermore, the NHTSA requires Ford to review all recalls issued in the last three years to ensure they have been managed appropriately. An independent third party will also be appointed to oversee Ford's compliance with the NHTSA agreement.
