Finally, I tried the Android tablet designed for seniors, and I was impressed.
What’s exciting about an Android tablet designed for seniors? I had the opportunity to find out at CES 2025.
The GrandPad is an Android tablet specifically designed for seniors, which has been on the market for several years. I recently had the opportunity to test it during CES 2025, and I found it to be a surprisingly capable device, now enhanced with artificial intelligence features.
This 8-inch tablet was created with the goal of keeping seniors connected with their family, friends, and caregivers, while promoting their independence and confidence in using technology. During my experience, I noticed that the design of the GrandPad resembles the classic Nexus 7, which is not coincidental, as its development was initially based on a modified version of this model.
The features of the GrandPad are designed to facilitate its use, incorporating large, easy-to-read icons and simplified navigation. Moreover, it allows users to make video calls, participate in turn-based games, share photos without the need for a public network, and access personalized content based on the user's interests.
A standout aspect of the GrandPad is its customer support team, proactively available every day of the year. Isaac Lien, co-founder of the company, stated that if they detect the device's battery is low and it is not plugged in, they directly reach out to the user to remind them to connect it. He emphasized that loneliness is a significant issue for many of their older clients, and they want them to feel supported, even if they need assistance in the early hours of Christmas morning.
Security is a fundamental pillar of the GrandPad. This device comes with a private network that blocks spam calls and scams, an exclusive email feature to filter out unreliable communications, and a permanent LTE connection thanks to an included SIM card. This ensures that the user receives security updates, even without access to Wi-Fi.
Despite being based on Android 8 AOSP from 2017, Lien assured that critical security updates are silently installed overnight. The modular nature of the software allows users to receive these updates without complications. Additionally, the company is dedicated to continuously improving the user experience and provides information about new features and changes.
At CES 2025, GrandPad introduced “Grandie Chat,” a voice-controlled feature that utilizes OpenAI models to facilitate interaction with technology. This tool has led GrandPad users to adopt generative artificial intelligence at a rate three times higher than their age peers. According to Lien, many users had never used a computer before, but with Grandie Chat, they discover that interacting is as simple as having a conversation.
The GrandPad also includes a wireless charging dock that makes it easy to use, allowing the device to be placed without the need to align pins or connect cables, which represents a significant advantage for the target audience. The combination of its simplicity, security, and artificial intelligence capabilities makes the GrandPad a unique device in its category. While it may not be a tablet for everyone, it becomes very appealing for grandparents who want to stay connected with an easy-to-use device.
