Finally, an electric bike that charges via USB-C.

From zero to one hundred percent in three hours using a charger you might already have.

Ampler, known for its direct-to-consumer electric bicycles, has launched the Nova series, which includes the Nova and Nova Pro models. These bikes stand out for their innovation by incorporating a USB-C charging port into the frame. This port not only allows the bike to be charged but can also charge electronic devices in case of emergency, although it will currently only be available in Europe.

Based in Estonia, Ampler manufactures its bicycles in Tallinn using mostly standard parts that can be easily repaired at any local shop. The integration of USB-C charging is convenient, especially as Europe adopts this standard to reduce waste and improve sustainability. This makes it easier to find a compatible charger, especially if you forget your own.

The Nova series comes equipped with integrated 48V and 336Wh batteries, which, while removable only for service, can be fully charged in an impressive time of three hours using a USB-C PD 3.1 charger of up to 140W. This efficiency surpasses many electric bike models that use proprietary connectors, which often require five hours or more to complete charging. Additionally, 240W USB-C chargers are starting to appear on the market, which could make this option even more competitive.

Ampler has shown that its bikes are compatible with less powerful chargers, such as those from Ikea and MacBook, which use the USB-C PD 3.0 specification. For those without such a charger, the company offers its own 140W USB-C PD 3.1 charger for a price of €80 (approximately $87). The charging port on the Nova series is bidirectional but has a limited capacity to charge other devices at 15W.

The Nova and Nova Pro models are available in two frame configurations: step-through and standard, in three different sizes, with 250W motors that reach a maximum speed of 25 km/h. The series represents an upgrade from the Stout and Stella models, designed to be more compatible with accessories such as U-locks, third-party seats, and child carriers. The base Nova model features 27.5-inch tires and a nine-speed chain and derailleur transmission system. On the other hand, the Nova Pro utilizes a single-speed transmission system with a Gates Carbon belt, an ideal option for the flat streets of Amsterdam.

Both models can be reserved starting today in the UK, the EU, and Switzerland, with shipping scheduled to begin in June. Additionally, Ampler has official service centers in Germany and a network of "Ampler Friendly" workshops spread across Europe. Each bike includes a two-year warranty and a 14-day return policy.

Correction (April 1): An earlier version stated that the Nova Pro had the option of a 10-speed hub with belt transmission, but the choice is limited to either a single-speed belt or a traditional 10-speed chain and derailleur system.
