Face ID could receive a significant update in the iPhone 17. Here’s what could change.
An important change may be about to come to at least one new iPhone model: the removal of the notch.
Over the years, various rumors have emerged about Apple's intention to incorporate Face ID technology behind the screen in future iPhone models. Recently, the company received a patent in the United States covering this technology, suggesting that this feature could debut in at least one of the models of the upcoming iPhone 17 series, scheduled for release next year.
The patent details the complex arrangement of cameras and other sensors hidden behind an active section of the display. This innovation could finally eliminate the infamous notch that has characterized recent iPhone models. According to the document, "such placement... saves display area, as otherwise the source would have to be situated in a notch area... (used in other devices, such as cameras and other radiation sensors), thereby expanding the notch and consequently reducing the usable area of the display."
The iPhone X, launched in 2017, was Apple's first device to feature this notch, a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen designed to house the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and the front cameras. Despite its advantages, the notch has often been a disruptive element in terms of maintaining a clean and continuous display aesthetic. In recent years, Apple has gradually improved the size of the notch, making it slightly smaller and more advanced. The recent introduction of Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro created a more interactive and functional notch, although it has never been completely eliminated.
The discussion surrounding the design has generated speculation and hope among Apple fans that the company might take more steps to minimize or completely redesign the notch. For at least the last two iPhone cycles, rumors have circulated about the possibility that Apple would reduce the size of the notch, although its elimination had not been considered. However, the recent patent suggests that the company plans to eliminate it, rather than just shrinking its size. There's a possibility that three of next year's models—the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—could feature smaller notches for a slightly more refined look.
Nevertheless, the much-discussed "iPhone Air," which could be positioned as a new premium option, might be the first Apple device to replace the traditional notch with Face ID components located beneath the glass. This would represent a significant milestone in Apple's design evolution, allowing for a more seamless display. In this scenario, the iPhone Air might feature a small hole for the camera instead of a notch, similar to designs from other smartphone brands. This innovative approach aligns with current trends to maximize screen space and enhances the overall user experience by providing a more immersive viewing experience without physical interruptions.
More will soon be known, as the iPhone 17 series is expected to be announced in September 2025. Until then, rumors will continue to grow along with more news and speculation.
