It's easy to update all Apple AirPods to USB-C using these smart cases.

We bid farewell to the Lightning port.

AirPods users who still use Lightning ports now have an option to upgrade to USB-C without the need for complicated modifications or completely replacing the case. Engineer Ken Pillonel has designed a smart case for older AirPods models that incorporates a USB-C charging port on its exterior. These protective cases are made from flexible and durable 3D-printed plastic and can be installed on the AirPods charging case in about 10 seconds.

The USB-C port allows power transfer to the Lightning port of the AirPods, thanks to additional electronic components hidden at the base of the case. Moreover, the case can be easily removed if direct access to the Lightning port is needed. Pillonel's USB-C cases are compatible with the original AirPods and extend to AirPods Pro 2.

Case options are also available for first, second, and third-generation AirPods, as the new AirPods 4 already come equipped with USB-C. Additionally, there are models available for the original AirPods Pro and the Lightning version of AirPods Pro 2, which were updated by Apple last year to include USB-C. While Apple offers a replacement USB-C charging case for AirPods Pro 2 for $99, Pillonel's cases are priced between $30 and $40.

Before making a purchase, it is advisable to check the specific model number on the AirPods charging case to ensure compatibility with the versions listed. Furthermore, Pillonel has developed a USB-C adapter for the original AirPods Max. This adapter connects to the Lightning port and is placed at the bottom of the right ear cup, providing a more affordable solution for those who don't want to spend $549 on the new USB-C model.

For several years, Pillonel has been trying to challenge the use of the Lightning port, which has been criticized for its obsolescence as USB-C has become more common. In 2021, he launched an open-source design to upgrade the iPhone X to USB-C and subsequently demonstrated methods to bring AirPods and AirPods Max to this new technology. Although he also sells electronic kits for users to make these upgrades themselves, the new cases and adapter do not require hardware modifications or soldering skills.
