Elon Musk's quest for dominance has become global.
After consolidating his influence in the Republican politics of the United States, the industrialist who is now impacting European politics is also emerging as a reference for the far right on an international level.
Elon Musk, owner of X and centibillionaire, has emerged as a key figure in right-wing and Republican politics during the elections in the United States, favoring Donald Trump's return to the presidency. However, it seems that his foray into the political arena is just beginning. Since Trump’s victory, Musk has also begun to influence European politics, generating controversies in the United Kingdom and announcing a discussion on X Spaces with Alice Weidel, leader of the German right-wing party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), in preparation for the elections in Germany in February.
According to João Vieira Magalhaes, assistant professor at the University of Groningen, Musk can be seen as an international far-right leader, articulating a movement that, while already existing, is presented in a fragmented way. Through X and his significant media presence, Musk is unifying and promoting the far-right globally.
During the U.S. elections, Musk established himself as one of Trump's main allies, supporting and financing his campaign through America PAC and appearing on the campaign trail with him. His control over X allowed him to elevate the campaign's viewpoints, facilitating the return of previously banned figures on the platform. Recent investigations indicate that interactions with Musk’s posts and other conservatives increased after his public endorsement of Trump, which Magalhaes describes as a “content moderation of illiberal nature.”
In December, the German government accused Musk of interfering in the country's elections after he wrote an article supporting the AfD. This party, which rose to power after the 2015 refugee crisis, has a radically anti-immigrant stance. Recently, it was revealed that AfD members met with far-right and neo-Nazi political leaders to discuss plans for mass deportations should they gain more power, leading to their activities being monitored by intelligence agencies. The AfD has effectively utilized social media to garner support, launching anti-immigrant ads that occasionally violated the policies of the involved platforms.
In response to Musk’s article, Weidel published a video thanking him and wishing him well alongside Trump. However, Germany is not the only country where Musk is venturing into politics. Since the conclusion of the elections in the U.S., he has also targeted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, calling for accountability and suggesting his imprisonment. Starmer represents one of the few left-wing governments in developed countries, motivating Musk to be particularly vigorous in his criticisms.
Additionally, Musk has promoted conspiracy theories about Muslim "grooming" gangs in the UK and has demanded the release of Tommy Robinson, a far-right activist with a history of racist content. Although initially, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, disagreed with Musk, in a recent appearance on his television program, he seemed to change his stance by questioning Robinson's imprisonment.
In Brazil, Musk also had clashes with authorities when he refused to comply with court orders seeking the removal of accounts and content on X that compromised the integrity of the elections, a situation that culminated in fines against him and his company Starlink. Musk's actions were seen as an attempt to undermine Brazil's democracy.
Musk is positioning himself not only as a link between different political and social groups internationally, but his political involvement could also benefit his business interests by reducing regulations impacting social media in Europe. The European Union is investigating X for possible violations of the Digital Services Act, which could result in sanctions for the platform. In Italy, he is seeking a deal with Giorgia Meloni's government to launch satellite communications through Starlink, valued at $1.5 billion.
In summary, Musk appears determined to become a political force that transcends national borders, providing a space for right-wing perspectives to thrive in contemporary debates.
