Elon Musk's DOGE team seeks to take control of USAID.
Two senior officials from USAID have been suspended for denying Musk access to certain systems.
Two senior officials from USAID have been suspended after restricting access to agency systems for staff related to Elon Musk. The events unfolded on Saturday night when this staff attempted to enter USAID's offices, apparently with the intention of obtaining sensitive and possibly classified information. As a result, the suspended officials have been placed on administrative leave.
The situation at USAID is now uncertain, as the agency manages billions in global aid, supporting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that combat poverty, hunger, and disasters. As an entity dedicated to distributing resources to the most vulnerable sectors, USAID has become a target for Musk and former President Donald Trump. Both have tried to dismantle social safety networks such as FAFSA and SNAP, although they have been halted by federal judges.
Previous executive orders from Trump had already caused delays in aid shipments and freezes on funds for NGOs operating in crisis areas. Recently, it was reported that 60 members of the staff at USAID were accused of attempting to circumvent an executive order regarding foreign aid. Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified this freeze, stating that "the U.S. government is not a charity."
With its leaders incapacitated and systems compromised, the agency's ability to deliver vital aid is once again in serious jeopardy. On the other hand, Musk, the current CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has been very active in his posts, using this platform to criticize and justify his involvement with USAID, labeling the agency as "malevolent," a "criminal organization," and a "den of vipers of radical Marxists who hate America."
Musk and his allies at the Office of Personnel Management have already taken control of the computer systems within the U.S. Treasury, the agency that manages payments totaling six trillion dollars, encompassing nearly the entire federal budget. Musk's actions, under the guise of budget cuts, have allowed him to decide which organizations and programs receive funding. If he or Trump determines that certain groups or competitors do not deserve resources, they can completely shut them out, which represents a flagrant violation of Congress's power to manage the budget, warranting immediate attention.
At this moment, USAID is in a state of uncertainty, as reports indicate that the entire public affairs office of the agency has been placed on leave and blocked from its systems.
