Elderly Woman from Mumbai Scammed of 1.5 Crore Rupees After Sending Food to Her Daughter in the U.S.

Criminals impersonated Delhi police officers through video calls.

In a recent scam, a 78-year-old woman from Mumbai became the victim of a fraud that cost her 1.5 crore rupees. The elderly woman, who lives in South Mumbai, was sending food products to her daughter living in the United States when she received a call the next day, in which the fraudsters implicated her in criminal activities.

The scammers claimed that the package she had sent contained drugs, $2000 in cash, her passport, and credit cards. Additionally, they alleged that a copy of her Aadhaar card had also been found inside the shipment, accusing her of collaborating with criminals. The following day, the con artists impersonated Delhi police officers. During a series of video calls, the fake cops conducted a supposed interview, displaying fake items and issuing a fraudulent arrest warrant.

Convinced that she needed to cooperate with the investigation, the woman ended up transferring 1.5 crore rupees to different accounts controlled by the scammers. It was only when her family realized the situation that they contacted the cyber police helpline to report the crime.
