The next Apple HomeKit device could combine HomePod, iPad, and artificial intelligence technology.

Findings in Apple’s internal code suggest that a new accessory for HomeKit could be on the way.

Apple HomeKit has historically been overshadowed by competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant, notably lacking a smart display comparable to devices like the Echo Show 15 or the Nest Hub. However, recent rumors suggest that the company may be working on a new gadget that could change this situation.

Codes found in Apple's internal systems reference something called HomeAccessory17,1, which, although it may seem insignificant, shares a similar naming convention with the HomePod, known as AudioAccessory. There are still few details to draw a definitive conclusion, but it is speculated that it could incorporate the A18 chip and have features focused on artificial intelligence. Apple already has plans to integrate OpenAI and Siri, which could elevate the intelligence of a smart home system to unprecedented levels, potentially surpassing what Alexa currently offers, although Google Assistant, with its use of Gemini, could present tough competition.

The code also suggests that the HomeAccessory, which is likely not the final name of the product, could operate on a version of tvOS. If so, this new device might combine functionalities of an iPad and a HomePod, taking a form that could resemble that of the Google Pixel Tablet.

Other speculation suggests that the next HomeKit device could feature a camera for user identification and gesture recognition. Although this information has not yet been confirmed, it is exciting to see new additions to a platform that has been relatively neglected. With confirmed changes arriving in HomeKit with iOS 18, including improved controls for guests and support for robotic vacuums, it seems that HomeKit may finally receive the attention it needs.
