Do you miss the classic HBO channels? Max is testing a similar experience that solves the dilemma of what to watch.
Joining platforms like Disney Plus and Peacock.
Max has begun implementing a new channel system that allows its subscribers in the United States to access a live stream of shows and movies. This functionality is similar to what other platforms like Peacock and Disney Plus offer and aims to simplify the content selection experience by allowing users to tune into themed channels.
At its launch, the new Max channels will be available exclusively to subscribers of the Ad-Free and Ultimate Ad-Free plans. In this first phase, the platform will offer five different channels: HBO, HBO 2, HBO Comedy, HBO Signature, and HBO Zone, all designed to stream a variety of classic HBO programming, including series, movies, documentaries, and specials.
The experience provided by this service is similar to that of traditional cable channels, but with modern enhancements that include the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward during the stream. These channels will be integrated into the Max app, providing a complement to the content search and consumption experience that streaming services already offer.
It’s worth noting that the initial selection of channels reflects the programming that HBO offered during its golden age. Max has indicated that the launch of this new functionality lays the groundwork for future iterations and innovations, suggesting that themed channels may appear throughout the year, especially coinciding with the premiere of new shows. For instance, they could create a special channel dedicated to previous seasons of House of the Dragon when a new season launches, allowing subscribers to catch up on related content.
As testing progresses, Max may make adjustments to the design and functionalities of the channels before rolling it out to all users in the country and other markets. For those with access to the mentioned plans, it is recommended to keep an eye on the new channels bar on the Max homepage.
