Disney creates a specialized group in AI and XR to coordinate its use and adoption across the company.

It seems that Disney is taking artificial intelligence and extended reality seriously.

Disney has decided to intensify its strategy in artificial intelligence and extended reality technologies by creating a new unit dedicated to emerging technologies. This new division, called the Technology Enablement Office, will be responsible for coordinating the research, adoption, and use of artificial intelligence, as well as augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Jamie Voris, who previously held the position of CTO in Disney's Studio Technology division, has been appointed to lead this new unit. Voris joined Disney in 2010 after serving as CTO of the National Football League and most recently was responsible for developing the company's Apple Vision Pro app. He will report to Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. The company reportedly plans to expand this unit to approximately 100 employees in the near future.

In a shared email, Bergman stated that the pace and scope of advancements in artificial intelligence and extended reality are significant and will continue to influence consumer experiences, creative efforts, and the business for years to come. Therefore, he considers it crucial for Disney to explore exciting opportunities and manage associated risks. The creation of this new group highlights the company's commitment to responsible use and best practices in these areas.

A Disney spokesperson clarified that the Technology Enablement Office will not take over existing projects related to artificial intelligence and extended reality but will support teams already working on products with these technologies, ensuring that their efforts align with the company’s broader strategic goals. "This is about providing an additional focus, alignment, and speed to these efforts, as well as reaffirming our commitment to being a positive force in defining responsible practices," the spokesperson added.

Disney has undoubtedly demonstrated its ability to adapt to technological changes over the past two decades, outpacing much of Hollywood in this respect. For example, its use of Unreal Engine along with a digital set known as The Volume has optimized the production of series with complex visual effects, such as The Mandalorian. Given that extended reality and artificial intelligence technologies are driving significant transformations in the way people work and entertain themselves, it makes sense for the company to implement additional oversight in their use.
