DirecTV launches a new service that will offer more movies and series for free to watch online.
The best live television service will be available for free and on demand very soon.
DirecTV is about to enter the competitive world of online streaming with its new free service, which will launch on November 15. This ad-supported free streaming television service (FAST) will provide an alternative to other free streaming platforms already on the market.
The company, known for its live TV service called DirecTV Stream, will offer access to more than 150 channels, including network, local, and sports channels. However, not all of these channels will be available on the new service; instead, DirecTV will focus on providing "curated content from FAST channels."
In addition to the above, MyFree DirecTV will feature a large library of movies and shows available on demand, although the exact size of this catalog has not yet been revealed. The company plans to expand its content in 2025 and beyond.
Access to this new service will be possible in the United States through mobile devices, some smart TVs, and streaming devices. Current subscribers of DirecTV packages will also be able to use their personal 'Your TV' carousel in the new free service.
Amy Leifer, head of advertising at DirecTV, commented that the goal of this new service is to provide consumers with quality content with more options and control at an affordable price. With FAST services generating nearly $8 billion in the United States this year, it highlights the growing demand for alternatives for those who have exhausted subscription options.
The free streaming market is quickly filling up, with competitors like Comcast's Xumo, Amazon's FreeVee, and Paramount's Pluto TV, with even Netflix reportedly interested in launching a completely free, ad-supported service. The introduction of MyFree DirecTV is particularly noteworthy, given its recent connection with Dish Network, which acquired DirecTV's video distribution operations in September 2024, including the Sling TV streaming service.
It is still officially unknown what the MyFree DirecTV library will look like, but there is a possibility that these sister services will expand their catalog. Additionally, it has been reported that Lionsgate's FAST channel MovieSphere, which is part of DirecTV's channel lineup, will include popular movies such as 3:10 to Yuma, Ender’s Game, and Wind River, suggesting that the new service could offer a rich variety of content.
