Could "Horizon: An American Saga" by Kevin Costner Find a Place on Netflix?

In an unexpected news, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available on Netflix. Is Kevin Costner trying to make his western film a permanent fixture on the platform?

Horizon: An American Saga, directed by Kevin Costner, has found a new home on the streaming platform Netflix, which is surprising given that it was thought to be an exclusive for Max. Currently, the first part of the saga is available for Netflix subscribers. This decision is part of Warner Bros.' recent strategy to license its movies and shows to the streaming platform, a practice they have been undertaking for over a year. In fact, Dune: Part Two, which is shaping up to be Warner Bros.' most successful film in 2024, is also available on Netflix.

In July, it was reported that Netflix had made an offer to acquire the rights to Horizon: An American Saga, including funding for the subsequent parts of the series. However, Costner rejected this proposal, reaffirming his intention to release the film in theaters. After its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, the film was released in theaters on June 28 of that year. Despite having a budget of $50 million, the film only grossed $38 million, leading Warner Bros. to remove the sequel, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, from its release schedule, although the latter was presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2024.

Despite the difficulties, Costner has expressed his commitment to making the continuations of the saga. In recent interviews, he mentioned that he is in talks with potential investors to secure the necessary funds to produce chapters 3 and 4. "I am going to make chapter 3," Costner stated. "I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I will, and then I will make the fourth. And if you want to say 'The end' at that point, then it will be the end."

If Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 performs well on Netflix, it is possible that Costner may reconsider exploring future installments of the saga on the platform.
