Clear some space on your shelves, recent leaks suggest that Nintendo Switch 2 game boxes will be larger than before.

"Growing"

Recently, a new rumor has emerged regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, related to the possible physical size of the game boxes. A listing from a video game retailer in France suggested that the packaging for the Nintendo Switch 2 could be larger than that of the original version. According to the available information, the estimated dimensions of a mysterious game box for the Nintendo Switch 2 would be 19.5 cm tall and 13 cm wide. In contrast, the current game boxes for the Nintendo Switch measure 16.9 cm in height and 10.4 cm in width. This change could make it easier for consumers to identify new games.

One question that arises is whether this increase in size will also mean that the game cartridges will be larger. Although this cannot be confirmed at this time, there could be a physical difference, similar to the transition from Nintendo DS cartridges to Nintendo 3DS, which would prevent some games for the Nintendo Switch 2 from fully inserting into an original Nintendo Switch. This would be consistent, given that new games for the Switch 2 will not be fully compatible with the previous console.

Despite this, Nintendo has assured that the new console will be compatible with most physical games from the original Nintendo Switch, suggesting that the design of the cartridges will not change drastically. It is likely that both types of cartridges will need to be compatible with the same slot on the new machine, so a slight increase in size may be sufficient.

For now, all of this is mere speculation, and we will have to wait for the specific details that Nintendo will reveal in the upcoming Nintendo Direct, scheduled for April 2, 2025.
