Chrome launches new 'Performance' tools to manage memory-hogging tabs.
Google continues to work on improving memory management in Chrome.
Google is implementing new memory management features in Chrome aimed at making it easier to handle excessive tabs. Among the new features are "performance issue alerts" and adjustments to the existing Memory Saver function, which already works to free up resources from inactive tabs running in the background.
The alerts are triggered when a new Performance Detection tool identifies that one of your tabs is consuming more resources than is deemed appropriate. This notification appears next to your account icon in the Chrome toolbar, represented by a small gauge-like graphic. If you click on the graphic, a list of the problematic tabs will appear, giving you the option to "Discard" or "Fix now."
Additionally, Google has improved the Memory Saver feature, launched in 2022, which pauses tabs that consume a lot of resources on your computer. A Google spokesperson has confirmed that the modes are called "Moderate," "Balanced," and "Maximum." According to the information provided, the Moderate mode interprets system needs and manages tabs accordingly; Balanced mode operates based on system needs and browsing habits; and Maximum mode deactivates tabs more quickly once you stop using them.
To access the new settings, simply click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of Chrome, select Settings, and then click on the "Performance" tab on the left. You will find a new switch for "performance issue alerts" under the General section and updated Memory Saver options below it.
