Elon Musk unveiled Tesla's latest innovations on Thursday night, highlighting the sleek Cybercab robotaxi and a prototype of its new electric van, stating that "the future has to look like the future." However, some police forces in California are beginning to question the decision to replace their fleets with Tesla Model Y vehicles. While these cars are environmentally friendly and prepare police departments for a zero-emissions future, testimonies from three police chiefs in Northern California indicate that Teslas present various challenges.
For example, once the necessary modifications are made, the back seat of the vehicles is too small to accommodate more than one passenger, while the front space is cramped for officers. Additionally, they mention issues related to "autopilot interference" when trying to exit the roadway. The reliance on unsecured charging stations also puts officers at risk when it comes to transporting suspects over long distances. Finally, it is noted that in combat situations, police training teaches officers to take cover behind the engine block of a vehicle, something that is not possible with electric vehicles.
