Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is set to launch a new crewed capsule on Monday.

Blue Origin strives to compete with SpaceX.

Blue Origin is finalizing the details for the launch of its NS-27 mission, which will utilize the RSS Kármán Line crew capsule, scheduled for Monday at 9 AM Eastern Time. This launch will mark the debut of the capsule, which, according to the company, will feature improvements in performance and reusability, as well as a new design and additional space for payloads on the launcher.

During this flight, two LIDAR sensors will be transported as part of Blue Origin's Lunar Permanence program, aimed at the development of lunar modules. In total, 12 payloads will be sent on board, including ultra-wideband proximity operation sensors, a recreation of the black monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as postcards from students sent to the charitable organization Club for the Future. The company will provide a live stream of the launch through its website, starting 15 minutes before liftoff.

If Monday's launch proceeds as planned, it will be the second flight of New Shepard since May, when the company conducted its first crewed launch since 2022. Another New Shepard flight was completed in August.

The upcoming NS-27 flight comes as Blue Origin seeks to position itself as a true competitor to SpaceX. The company's CEO, Dave Limp, who took over late last year, commented in an interview that the company needs to "be able to manufacture things more efficiently" to become "a world-class manufacturer." Limp hopes that by the end of the year, the company will manage to deliver approximately one engine per week, although he is unsure if that exact target will be met; he does anticipate, however, that they will be below 10 days.

Additionally, Blue Origin plans to launch the New Glenn, its large reusable launcher, which recently completed its first static fire test of the second stage, in November. The company claims that this rocket can carry up to 45,000 kilograms (over 99,000 pounds) to low Earth orbit, a weight that, according to observations, is approximately double the capacity of SpaceX's Falcon 9. Blue Origin also hopes to land the launcher on its maiden flight.
