Aventon unveils its new Abound LR electric bike for heavy and smart loads.

The Abound LR is Aventon's third electric bike equipped with an Access Control Unit (ACU) system, which uses GPS technology and 4G connectivity to enhance safety, comfort, and maintenance.

Aventon has introduced the Abound LR, a long-range electric cargo bike that offers a longer option compared to the Abound SR and the original model in the Aventon Abound series. During a pre-launch press conference in February, the company described the Abound SR as a general-use bike and the Abound LR as an ideal cargo vehicle for families, suggesting it could serve as a substitute for a second car.

The new version, featuring a longer rack, shares many technical characteristics and smart attributes based on the ACU of the Abound SR, although it differs in size and weight. The Abound LR weighs 8 pounds more and measures 7.1 inches longer than the SR. This is akin to the comparison between the Chevy Tahoe and the Suburban, both created for similar purposes, where one is simply longer than the other.

Weighing 88 pounds, the Abound LR can be challenging to pedal without assistance, especially on non-flat terrain. During a test in Long Beach, California, with a body weight of 160 pounds, it was noted that the motor provides 80 Nm of torque, allowing for an agile start at traffic lights. This bike is classified as a Class 2 e-bike, which limits pedal assist and throttle use to a maximum of 20 mph.

Its drive system features a 36V, 750-watt rear hub motor, along with a 36V, 20Ah battery that offers 708 Wh of electrical energy. Aventon estimates that the Abound LR can achieve a range of up to 60 miles, although reaching this requires using the lowest level of pedal assist while maintaining a moderate speed. Various factors such as load weight, speed, surface type, and incline can affect battery duration.

A torque sensor provides pedal assist that adjusts to the applied force rather than speed, making the assisted pedaling experience more effective. The Ride Tune feature in the Aventon app allows for customization of pedal assist levels. It has a load capacity of 440 pounds, with a maximum weight of 143 pounds on the rear rack. To ensure safety and stability, it is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes and 180 mm rotors at the front and 203 mm at the rear.

The Abound LR is suitable for riders between 4 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 6 inches tall, thanks to its adjustable handlebars and seat, as well as a standard seat suspension and a front suspension axle that absorbs impacts. It also includes protective bars for the rear wheels, making it easier to load children or cargo. Standard equipment includes the rear rack, fenders, platforms, and a small storage bag that attaches to the frame, although it is not large enough to accommodate most helmets.

One of the standout features of the Abound LR is the integration of the ACU, Aventon’s Control Unit, which utilizes GPS and 4G connectivity to enhance the bike's safety and convenience. Its functionalities include over-the-air (OTA) system updates, alarm capabilities, geofencing, GPS tracking, and an electronic locking system. Although no cargo was transported during the tests conducted, a full review of the Abound LR is anticipated in the future. The bike is already available for purchase at a price of $1,999 through dealers and on Aventon's website.
