Arrested in Canada a hacker suspected of major security breaches at Ticketmaster and AT&T.
The violations affected millions of people.
Canadian authorities have arrested an individual suspected of stealing data from approximately 165 companies using the cloud storage services of Snowflake. This arrest was confirmed by Ian McLeod, spokesperson for the Department of Justice of Canada, who indicated that Alexander "Connor" Moucka was arrested on October 30, following a request from the United States government.
Moucka appeared in court that same day, and his case was postponed until November 5, 2024. McLeod mentioned that they cannot offer further details about the case due to extradition requests being handled as confidential bilateral communications.
In May, Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation, revealed that it had suffered a significant data breach after alleged customer information appeared for sale on hacker forums. This was just the first in a series of security breaches, with other companies linked to Snowflake, such as AT&T, Santander Bank, Advanced Auto Parts, and Lending Tree subsidiary Quote Wizard, also reporting incidents affecting millions of customers.
An investigation conducted by Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm owned by Google, found that a "financially motivated threat actor" had stolen a significant amount of data from around 165 Snowflake clients using compromised login credentials. There was no evidence that Snowflake itself had suffered a security breach.
