Apple explains why the iPhone 16e does without MagSafe and reveals that its preferred audience opts for wired charging.
Apple clarifies the absence of MagSafe in the iPhone 16e.
Apple has recently introduced its most affordable smartphone yet, the iPhone 16e, available for purchase in India and other markets starting Friday. This model features the powerful A18 chip and support for Apple Intelligence, delivering impressive performance at a more accessible price compared to other high-end models. However, its launch has sparked some controversy due to the absence of key features like Dynamic Island, MagSafe, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) connectivity, raising questions among tech enthusiasts.
One of the most notable differences in the iPhone 16e is the lack of support for MagSafe, a feature that has been present in iPhones since the iPhone 12. MagSafe allows for faster wireless charging as well as the use of magnetic accessories like wallets and mounts. While this feature has been well-received by many users, Apple has justified its absence in the iPhone 16e by arguing that the target audience for this model tends to prefer wired charging. As a result, the iPhone 16e includes a USB Type-C port, replacing the old Lightning connector.
In terms of wireless charging, the iPhone 16e has a limit of 7.5W with a Qi charger, which is lower than the faster wireless charging speeds (15W and 25W) offered by the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro with MagSafe. Apple believes that users in this price range are more accustomed to using wired charging or do not prioritize the faster wireless charging speeds provided by MagSafe.
In addition to the lack of MagSafe, the iPhone 16e does not feature UWB connectivity, which allows for precise tracking of devices like AirTags. This feature has become crucial for users of Apple’s item trackers. The company has also pointed out that its omission helps keep the price of the iPhone 16e lower, as it is designed for a user group that may not need such advanced functionality.
In India, the price of the iPhone 16e starts at Rs 59,900 for the base model with 128GB of storage. Compared to its higher-end models, such as the iPhone 15 (Rs 69,900) and the iPhone 16 (Rs 79,900), the iPhone 16e offers an affordable way to enter the iPhone ecosystem without a hefty cost. However, considering that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 are often available at lower prices during promotions, they remain an attractive option for those seeking features like MagSafe and UWB, provided they are willing to adjust their budget slightly.
