Sphere Entertainment has revealed that it is working on two new immersive experiences to be showcased at its stunning 516-foot-wide spherical venue in Las Vegas. The first is an enhanced version of The Wizard of Oz, which will debut on the sphere's 160,000-square-foot screen on August 28, 2025. Additionally, a cinematic work by Oscar-winning directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin will be available in 2026. This film will feature climber Alex Honnold, along with other elite athletes.
For the adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, Sphere Entertainment has teamed up with Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and Magnopus, a studio known for creating immersive experiences for companies such as Disney, Sony, and NASA. The company has highlighted that cutting-edge technologies will be used to enrich the original film, ensuring that the experience retains the essence of the classic while exploring new frontiers in sensory experiences.
Although The Wizard of Oz was restored in 4K HDR in 2020, the sphere's screen offers a stunning resolution of 16,000 pixels by 16,000 pixels. Moreover, this work promises sensory experiences that include sound and haptic technology, as well as the ability to recreate environmental elements like heat, wind, and smells, although specific details on how these features will be integrated into the immersive version of The Wizard of Oz have yet to be provided.
On the other hand, the film titled From The Edge will showcase extreme sports and five standout athletes: climber Alex Honnold, free diver Alenka Artnik, skier Markus Eder, surfer Kai Lenny, and BASE jumper Katie Hansen Lajeunesse. The team is currently filming in various locations, including Jordan, Dubai, Switzerland, the Bahamas, Austin, Las Vegas, and Maui.
Both productions come from Sphere Studios, the company's production studio located in Burbank, which opened nearly two years ago and has developed the ultra-high-resolution Big Sky camera system of Sphere Entertainment, currently in use for capturing footage of From The Edge.
