All phones should adopt this 50W wireless charging feature.
One of the features I like the most about the new OnePlus 13 is its 50W magnetic wireless charging. I will explain why all phone manufacturers should adopt this functionality.
I've been using the OnePlus 13 for about a month now, and it has quickly become my favorite Android smartphone. This device not only offers excellent battery life and ultra-fast charging but also features an outstanding camera. However, there’s one particular feature of the OnePlus 13 that I believe should be emulated by all phone manufacturers: the 50W AirVOOC wireless charging.
A common issue with wireless phone charging is the excessive heat it generates. The new AirVOOC charger includes a fan that keeps the device at a very comfortable temperature, even after charging for over an hour. Additionally, it provides faster wireless charging speeds than most phones in the U.S. can achieve when charging via cable. To verify this, I conducted tests with the OnePlus 13 and the iPhone 16 Pro.
The OnePlus 13 does not natively support magnetic wireless charging, so a magnetic case must be purchased, which costs $25. The AirVOOC charger has an additional cost of $80, and if you want a compatible charging stand and cable, the total comes to $155 to fully take advantage of this fast wireless charging.
Unlike the wireless charger that was released with the OnePlus 8 Pro in 2020, this new version features a "puck" design. This design offers some benefits, although it has one drawback: the integrated fan keeps the phone cool but makes it difficult to place the phone upright while charging, something that was possible with the previous charging stand. However, the main benefit—which also drives the need for the magnetic case—is that it works similarly to Apple’s MagSafe charging cable. The magnets in the case easily align with those in the charger, making it convenient to use the OnePlus 13 while charging, and it allows compatibility with other devices that have built-in magnets, like the iPhone 16.
To truly assess the value of this charger, I conducted a series of charging time tests. The OnePlus 13, using the 80W charger that comes in the box for the U.S. market, takes an average of 39 minutes to charge fully from zero, slightly longer than the 35 minutes stated in the specifications. As for the AirVOOC magnetic wireless charger, it claims to take around 75 minutes for a full charge, though my tests showed slightly shorter times. However, I found that placing the phone face down, restricting the airflow from the fan, drastically reduced the charging speed, reaching only 32% in an hour.
This charger is not only intended for the OnePlus 13 and OPPO Find X8 Pro but is also compatible with any device that supports the Qi wireless charging standard. While most current phones do not have magnetic charging, the upcoming Qi2 standard should make it easier to include magnets in more phones. Currently, the only phone that natively supports magnetic wireless charging is the iPhone line. And the answer to whether the AirVOOC charger works with the iPhone 16 Pro is yes, but with some considerations. The charging experience is not as fast as on the OnePlus 13, taking almost three hours to complete.
The arrival of Qi2 could expand the compatibility of this charger; however, still no other phone could charge at the same speeds that the OnePlus 13 offers. The Qi2 standard supports charging speeds of up to 25W, which is half the speed this charger allows. If more manufacturers adopted full support for AirVOOC, it would mean faster wireless charging for everyone.
In conclusion, while I like almost everything about OnePlus’s AirVOOC charger, the design could be optimized to prevent it from operating at a slow speed when the fan is facing down. However, it is undeniable that the charging speeds it offers are comparable to wired charging for most smartphones in the U.S., and while slower than wired charging, it is an interesting accessory to have. In particular, it helps keep the phone cool during charging, although its minimum cost is at least $105.
