"Admire an impressive image of an eclipse in space taken by the Blue Ghost mission."
The Blue Ghost mission by Firefly Aerospace to the moon has successfully captured stunning video footage of the Earth hiding behind the sun, as seen from space.
The Blue Ghost mission from Firefly Aerospace, launched earlier this month towards the Moon, has captured stunning images of Earth eclipsing the Sun from space. Currently, the Blue Ghost lander is in orbit around Earth, adjusting its trajectory to head towards lunar orbit in the coming weeks. During this time, it has been gathering data using its scientific instruments and testing its communication system.
In a recent update, Firefly announced that it has traveled 220,000 miles and transferred 1.4 GB of data in just five days since the mission began. The company shared the first image of the lander in space, showcasing some of the six NASA experiments on board, including an X-ray instrument called LEXI, designed to observe Earth's magnetosphere from the Moon.
The latest advancement of the mission is a video that shows the moment when Earth comes between the Sun, creating an eclipse. Firefly also confirmed that it has received a signal from a joint experiment by NASA and the Italian Space Agency called the Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE). This experiment successfully contacted the global satellite system from a distance of 205,674 miles, setting a new record.
The company emphasized that this connection is a significant step towards developing lunar navigation solutions, suggesting that Earth-based GNSS constellations could be used for navigation for nearly 90% of the distance to the Moon. The Blue Ghost will continue its 25-day orbit around Earth before embarking on a four-day journey to the Moon, with the intention of entering lunar orbit in early March.
