Adam Mosseri claims that Threads and Instagram have become political platforms.
State reboot.
For almost a year, Instagram and Threads have defaulted to blocking "political" content recommendations from accounts not followed by users. However, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has announced that political content will begin to be included in recommendations on both platforms. This shift is notable considering that in 2023, Mosseri expressed a desire to create a more peaceful environment for conversations, aiming to avoid encouraging politics and tough news.
With Meta's new moderation approach and updated rules about what users can post, a significant transformation is evident, especially with the arrival of the new Trump administration. Until now, users had to choose to see recommendations for content considered political, but starting this week in the U.S. and next week in the rest of the world, those recommendations will be activated automatically. There will also be a content control setting that offers options to see less, standard (the default setting), or more political content.
In a series of posts on Threads, Mosseri reiterated that he has always been against showing political content from accounts that users do not follow, and acknowledged that it has been impractical to establish a clear line regarding what is considered political content. In a video on Instagram, he also emphasized that the demand for political content, especially on Threads, is very different from the previous perception that users were saturated with politics on the platforms. This change in perspective comes after Mark Zuckerberg's experience with the filters that affected the visibility of his post about recovering from an injury, and following the arrival of a new policy chief at Meta, who seems to be more favorable towards Trump.
