With the approach of the 2024 elections in the United States, the company Hiya, specialized in fraud detection and call filtering, has launched a free Chrome extension designed to identify deepfake voices. This innovative Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector "listens" to voices in videos or audio streams and provides an authenticity score that indicates the likelihood of them being real or fabricated.
According to Hiya, tests conducted by independent evaluators have validated the extension's accuracy at over 99%. The company asserts that this tool can also detect AI-generated voices that were not included in the training models. Moreover, they claim that the detector is capable of identifying voices created by new synthesis models as soon as they are released to the public.
Before its launch, tests were conducted with the extension, and its effective performance was observed. When analyzing a YouTube video about the blues pioneer Howlin’ Wolf, which was suspected of using AI narration, the detector gave an authenticity score of 1/100, classifying the content as likely a deepfake, thus confirming the initial suspicions.
Hiya took the opportunity to criticize social media platforms, pointing out their responsibility to inform users about the possibility that the content they consume may be an AI deepfake. Kush Parikh, president of Hiya, mentioned in a statement that the burden of responsibility falls on individuals, who must be vigilant about the risks and utilize tools like their Deepfake Voice Detector to verify any content they consider altered. Highlighting that this represents a significant demand, he expressed satisfaction in being able to offer a solution that returns some control to users.
The extension requires listening to just a few seconds of a voice to provide a result. It operates on a credit system that limits requests to Hiya's servers, allowing users to earn 20 credits daily. This may not be sufficient given the large amount of manipulative AI content expected on social media in the coming weeks.
