A fake malware alert is causing Docker Desktop to crash on Apple Macs.
It's time to update Docker Desktop.
Docker Desktop users on Mac have reported issues when trying to open the application, encountering a false malware alert at startup. Docker has confirmed that some versions of the software are failing to start due to this misleading notice. Christian Dupuis, a principal engineer, shared a screenshot on GitHub showing the message that states: "com.docker.vmnetd was not opened because it is damaged and can't be opened." However, Dupuis clarified that users seeing this alert are likely not at risk of infection, as the cause of the problem has been identified and a solution is being worked on.
According to the report, the source of the warning is due to some files present in existing installations having an incorrect signature. Docker Desktop, a tool that allows users to build, share, and run applications and microservices in containers, will require an update to resolve the issue. Currently, the latest version is 4.37.2, which aims to address this problem. Users should try to update through the application, although instructions have also been provided for those who cannot bypass the malware alert.
For versions 4.32 to 4.36, a separate patch is available, while versions 4.28 and earlier are not affected by this bug. Dupuis explained that the new version 4.37.2 prevents installations from entering a failed state, recommending an immediate update to avoid future issues.
A status page was recently updated indicating that Docker Desktop is still experiencing a partial service disruption. Chris Crone, director of engineering, expressed understanding of the importance of Docker Desktop for user workflows and assured that work is underway for a quick solution. For affected users, there is a temporary workaround that can restore functionality, although it is advised to wait for the long-term update if preferred.
