8BitDo launches a new version of the Retro Mechanical Keyboard with integrated numeric keypad.
The accessory company 8BitDo introduced its second product in two weeks: a new version of the Retro Mechanical Keyboard, which includes a numeric keypad and new key combinations.
8BitDo has unveiled its second product in two weeks, following the recent revelation of a game controller designed for Android phones. This time, the company has launched a new version of its Retro Mechanical Keyboard, which now includes a numeric keypad and new shortcuts. This accessory, priced at $120, retains the attractive Super Buttons that invite pressing.
The 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard 108, like its predecessor, is inspired by Nintendo's NES and Famicom consoles. The two versions closely resemble the colors of these iconic machines from the 80s: the NES-inspired variant features white, dark gray, and black tones, while the Famicom version showcases white and crimson. The latter retains Japanese markings beneath its English characters.
The new keyboard has been designed to be 22% wider than the standard version, allowing for the inclusion of the numeric keypad and additional functions. This expanded area also houses shortcuts for Windows, as well as Calculator, Function Lock, and Screen Lock buttons.
Essentially, the new keyboard maintains the original features of the 87-key model. This includes the option to use it in wired and wireless modes (Bluetooth or 2.4G), key customization through the 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 (available only for Windows), N-key rollover, and interchangeable keys.
This new model features the pair of Super Buttons found in the smaller variant. These programmable macro keys have a design reminiscent of the large A and B buttons from the NES and Famicom consoles. They connect directly to the keyboard via a 3.5mm connector, and it's possible to pair up to four sets. Super Buttons (available in red, blue, or yellow) can also be purchased for $30.24 each.
Although 8BitDo officially states that the keyboard is only compatible with Windows and Android, this is likely due to its customization software being available only for Windows. However, it is also possible to use it with macOS, albeit without the ability to customize its keys and macros or receive software updates.
The 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard 108 will be available in NES and Famicom versions starting December 12, and pre-orders can already be made for $120 through Amazon.
