2K Games ventures into risky territory by introducing a free hero shooter.
2K Games ventures into risky territory by unveiling a free-to-play first-person shooter focused on heroes. Project: Ethos incorporates intriguing elements from the roguelike genre.
Project: Ethos has been introduced, a free third-person shooter developed by 2K and 31st Union. This new proposal enters a competitive market, but the publisher describes it as an "exciting evolution" within the genre. This evolution seems to manifest in the inclusion of light roguelike mechanics. Each playable character can evolve throughout each match, thanks to semi-randomized upgrades that are unique to each hero. An example offered is how a sniper can transform into a "close-range fighter" or how a support character can become a "powerful lone wolf."
The "skills, risks, and challenges" vary in each match, allowing players to unlock powerful boosts that enhance their gameplay experience. It remains to be seen whether these mechanics will be enough to differentiate the game from other titles in the same genre, although players can find out for themselves as a community test is currently underway.
In this test, players can experience the trials mode, which consists of a "continuous and persistent fight," or participate in the Gauntlet, a standard tournament mode where teams compete in various brackets. The community test will be available until October 20 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and much of Europe. However, to access this early version, users must meet a somewhat tedious requirement: completing a Twitch Drop and streaming 30 minutes of content from one of the creators associated with 2K. No information has been provided about a release date for those who do not wish to participate in the streaming.
